12:00pm                           Park reserved to this time

We will provide a catered Mexican Food dinner (tacos, quesadillas, vegetarian, vegan options), s'mores around the campfire on Saturday and a light breakfast (coffee, juice, bagels) on Sunday morning. Everyone will need to bring dinner for Friday night (if you choose to sleepover both nights) and snacks/drinks for both days. There are several restaurants (Sparky's, Redboy Pizza etc) as well as a Safeway within a 10 minute drive of the campout.

Note: There are no AC outlets at the campsite. You should also bring your own pump if you plan to bring an inflatable mattress.

THE CAMPSITE: Bort Meadow is a 35 minute drive from Step One and occupies a large valley, the facility has a row of portable toilets, a public cooking grill, a water tap, and a campfire ring. This year no more than 8 cars will be allowed on the turn-around circle at the entrance of the meadow. Campers should come early Saturday afternoon and drop off their gear at the designated unloading/loading areas. After unloading, cars need to be moved immediately to the parking lot located 200 yards from the campsite - this is a Chabot Park requirement. No driving on the meadow is permitted. Families coming for dinner must park in the parking lot and walk over to the group area.

WEATHER CONCERNS: Should there be any surprises in the weather we will leave the latest go/no go information on the Step One message tape after 10am on Saturday (527-9021)

ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE: We have the park reserved between 12:00pm on Friday until 12:00pm on Sunday. The rangers request that the gate to Bort Meadow remain closed throughout our stay (otherwise the campsite will appear open to the public). The combination to the lock on the gate will be included in your Campout Bulletin. There are multiple locks, so you may have to try them to determine which one is the one associated with the Step One School Campout. As you enter or exit, please lock the gate behind you. Again, everyone must park in the parking area off the campsite once you have unloaded. There is no driving on the meadow for obvious ecological reasons.

CHOOSING YOUR SITE: Bort Meadow is more than big enough to accommodate us all. We do want to save some "play space" between the campfire ring on the hill and the eating area; please do not pitch your tents in this area.

CLEAN-UP:  This isn't anyone's favorite thing to do but we all need your help to ensure the campsite is clean after departure.

ALLERGIES: Occasionally the grass in the meadow is not cut before our arrival, so those with grass allergies should be prepared.

TICK CHECKS AND POISON OAK CARE: Get into the habit of quick tick checks, especially when your child returns from play in heavy vegetation. Do a thorough check (head to toe) just before bedtime and bathtime when you return home. We have a tick remover from REI in our first aid supply kit. Danger of diseases (e.g. Lyme's disease) carried by ticks are greatly reduced by early detection and removal. Also, please be cautious about poison oak exposure. If you think you or your kids may be been exposed, we are armed with Tecnu, a product that helps alleviate the effects. Please seek aid right away in the event of a possible exposure.

  3. Bring safe things to play with: frisbees, dolls, whiffle balls, nerf balls etc. Don't bring or play with dangerous things: pocket knives, sharp sticks, throwing rocks etc.
